Why I am standing to be an Independent Councillor
I want to change St Peters. I want to offer a voice free from party-political constraints, dedicated solely to the betterment of St. Peters ward and Ashton as a whole. I have observed the decline in St Peters, marked by persistent complaints from residents, which the Labour Council has consistently failed to address. Despite assurances and promises, their failure is clear in, for example, the closure of Ashton swimming baths and gym, despite public outcry.
The Labour Council's failure to address problems such as fly tipping has resulted in the problem getting worse, along with rat infestations and an increase in antisocial behaviour and crime. The policies implemented by the Labour Council also create difficulties for businesses, for example, a once a thriving market is now left with a ghostly atmosphere.
Ashton Town Centre was once a leading destination for both local and out-of-town shoppers. The closure of Woolworths, Topshop, Burton and Wilkinson amongst others, has left the centre mostly with charity shops, betting shops and discount shops. This needs to change.
